Making Finger Joints

Set bit height to approximately equal distance on the material. Make sample cuts, the first pass on one side of the material, then flip the material upside down and make a second pass. Rip this sample down the middle and dry fit the pieces. If you need to make any further adjustment, remember that you need adjust for only 1/2 of the error. Repeat the sample steps to get the exact fit. Be sure to save your sample to use as a gauge for quicker setups at a later date.

Refer to the drawings to find the approximate center of the finger joint and follow the procedure listed in the above instructions. It takes a few trials to get the exact alignment, but it is worth the effort since the glue surface is increased by over 100%. This is the best bit to use for end jointing wood pieces to make longer stock, plus, cabinet makers have historically used finger joints to make up thick blocks of material. For each thickness of material you are cutting, be sure to save a sample cut of the final alignment. Example: save samples for 5/8", 3/4", 7/8", 1". up to 1-9/16" max. Run bit at approximately 10,000-14,000 RPM.
